A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
