Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
